2014 Masters Age-Graded Performances

World Masters Athletics (WMA) has established a set of standards and formulas for comparing performances of people in different age groups. Through age-grading, you can see how your marks fare against older or younger athletes.  If you score above 90%, you are world class in your age group.  Marks over 80% are national class, over 70% is regional class, and over 60% is local class.  For years Jack Crook annually recognized those who scored 85% or better when determining the best performances for the year.  Jack’s last annual review was for 2011 and the review is back for 2014.
In 2014, 12 women and 13 men graded in that range of world- and national-level times (> 85%).

Female Masters (35+)

Deborah Torneden continues to be the dominant runner with the best grades in 3 events, including her 91.31% score in the 5K.  Her 19:04 age-adjusted would be equivalent to a 16:13.   Teresa Perky’s 91.29% grading was also in the 5K.  Being three years older than Deborah, her age-adjusted time also is the equivalent of 16:13.  Raquel Stucky’s  marathon time of 2:44:58 breaking Kathy Whitcomb’s 32-year old state record (2:48:37), merited an 85.68% score.  Trudy Calloway had two second-best scores.  Sheryl Drevo’s name appears only once on the list of top two scores but her year was special with all-time bests in the half marathon, 10 mile, 4 mile, 5K, and 1 mile.  Fourteen of the 19 top scorers were from the Wichita area.  Besides Perky, Cindy Cameron and Kathleen Johnson were the remaining state contributors from the Johnson County area.  Runners from other areas of the state were close or did their best runs out of state.

Male Masters (35+)

Heading the men’s list again is Wichita’s Dennis Smithhisler with the top 2 times in the half-marathon. He was the only man over 90% with his 1:13:07 at age 50 (age grades to 1:04:40).  Peter Mullin, a 63-year-old from Houston, was the highest of the near-90% scores with his 38:20 in the 10K (age grades to 30:01).  Next best was Smithhisler’s other half-marathon score, then Randy Wasinger’s 1-mile score of 88.92% (age-adjusted time of 4:10), and Keith Long’s 88.3% for the best 5K grade.

Ultras

We’ve added ultrarunning records this year following the second annual running of the KUS 6/12/24-hour race by the Kansas Ultrarunners Society on a certified course in Wichita.

The main highlight was a state record of 123.2 miles for 24 hours by Pete Kostelnick of Lincoln, Nebraska. Pete also won the solo race at the Brew to Brew 44-mile in April and completed the Badwater 135-mile in 2014. He broke the previous best of 121 miles by Sandy Powell  (a former member of the US women’s 100K national team), dating from 2002. Pete also broke the male record of 113.76 miles by Phil Sheridan, set in 1997. Phil still holds the Kansas resident record and the over-40 record. Dave Meeth of Wichita also set an over-50 record of 101.024 miles for 24 hours.

At 12 hours, Christine Ngai of Darien, Illinois, and Nicole Parkhurst of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, both ran 61.6 miles to break the record of 61.5 miles by Julie Perry of Wichita from 2013, and Stuart Johnson of Shawnee ran 62.832 miles for a Kansas resident record, just missing the state record of 63.2 miles from 1997.

At 6 hours, Mike Stout of Wichita set a state record with 40.656 miles in 2014 and Ashley Schurman of Crofton, Nebraska, ran 38.192 miles for a women’s record.
