Oct 30 - WAMEGO — It's been five years since the Baldwin High School’s cross country teams have both won state championships in the same year — until here today at the Class 4A state meet. The girls outdistanced runnerup Desoto 58 pts to 105 with a 7-11-19-21-25 finish among their top five. The boys were equally impressive scoring 66 pts (2-6-23-27-30) ahead of 2nd place Mulvane with 89 pts. Top finishers were Elizabeth Sigvaldson and Tony Weiss. more

Oct 29 - Entries are coming in for the Thanksgiving Day 5K in Lawrence from Alaska to Boston. Join our guests and the local crowd for a healthy start to the holiday feast. Oct 28 - From the NY Times: Having won world championships or set world records from the metric mile to the marathon, Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia is considered by many the greatest distance runner of this or any generation. And yet as he prepares for the New York City Marathon on Nov. 7, Gebrselassie’s world mark of 2 hours 3 minutes 59 seconds has fostered debate about competition versus records and has drawn criticism from some elite runners for the orchestrated way his fastest times over 26.2 miles were achieved. more

Oct 18 - There's a mile race in the the Catalina Mountains north of Tucson, AZ. That's the vertical measurement. It's actually one of the toughest road marathon races.

The New York Times reports: The New York marathon is a walk in the park compared with what took place up the side of this mountain on Sunday. Boston’s famed Heartbreak Hill? A molehill. In what was billed as the world’s toughest road marathon, 26.2 miles at high altitude that went up and up and then up some more, hundreds of runners huffed and puffed up one of Tucson’s highest peaks. more

Oct 16 - Former KU runner Paige Higgins is developing into one of the top marathoners in the U.S. and is featured in the Nov issue of Running Times. She worked with Greg McMillan on improving her running form.

Oct 11 - Top finish among Lawrence area runners at Chicago was Lisa McDermott in 3:37:10. more results

On the same day as the Chicago event (10/10/10), the best local finishers at the Prairie Fire Marathon in Wichita were Brad Rhoden (3:17:33) and Marla Rhoden (3:38:02), both of Topeka. In the half marathon, Kyle Gerstner had the best local time (1:35:36) while Lindsey Funk ran a 1:51:27; both are from Lawrence. more results

Oct 10 - Early results: At the Chicago Marathon, Lawrence's Cindy Dunham ran a 4:39:02 while John Dunham finished in 4:33:00 and Julie Gasper did 4:36:34.

Oct 9 - Results from the Nash Dash. 5K winners: Carlos Lopez 19:19 and Lori Norwood 21:05. 10K: DJ Hilding 35:50 and Danielle Snyder 44:56. King of the Hill: Jake Deckert 0:52 and Andrea Stewart 1:10. The event celebrated the 60 years the Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center has served the Lawrence community. Organizers ware not afraid to show off the fine hills as all runners got to run down 13th Street and up 12th Street and the 10Kers got the bonus uphill to 11th & West Campus Road.
