Club Minutes  May 2005 Meeting Minutes

To:  runLawrence club members

We had a good turnout for our May meeting.  Thank you to all members who have renewed your membership.  With many exciting developments in the club, we are pleased that you feel this club is worth your investment of time and money.  For those who have not yet renewed, the fee is $20 for individual and $25 for family membership to be mailed to Treasurer Molly Wood.  With the discounts offered by Francis Sporting Goods and Gary Gribble's Running Sports, it is well worth the membership.  Membership application is added below.

The club also features an outstanding newsletter which will be published quarterly.  Please send all submission for the newsletter to Janet and John Huchingson.

We had a very interesting report on the Paris Marathon from the Huchingsons - John having recently completed this marathon, and we hope to have a more complete rendering of this adventure in the next Second Wind.  Lori and Don Cackler were fresh from a visit to England, Scotland & Ireland.

More locally, several club members have been involved in community events such as the Hilltop Hustle and the National Collegiate Championship bicycle races which were held in Lawrence.  We have rented out our finish line/timing equipment to at least four small races this spring.

Another run for which we are trying to recruit a few volunteers  is the Saturday,  June 11 Tonganoxie Library Run.  This group has loaned runLawrence its timer on several occasions, and we need to show our appreciation by helping them out with their run.  Anyone who would like to volunteer, please contact me.

I am happy to report that we have a graphic artist who has agreed to work with us on a limited budget to come up with a club logo.  As soon as this is finalized, we will get a quantity of high-quality membership applications printed and get them distributed all around town.   We will also be able to get clothing items imprinted and that will allow for good publicity as many of our members enter and place in numerous area road runs.  They will also be eye-catching as we wear them when running in groups around town.   As Molly suggested last month, we can all do something to recruit new members as we all know runners who do not belong to the club.

We have had a few new beginner or returning runners contact the club and we are hoping to get more such runners so that we can establish a set time & place for new or starting-over runners.  In the meantime, we welcome them at the 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning runs from Deerfield School.

Several club members will be car-pooling to upcoming runs including Amy Thompson on May 30 and Hospital Hill on June 4.  Please contact me if you'd like to join us.

Please put our next monthly meeting on your calendars:  It is Sunday, June 5 at 4:00 p.m. in the basement conference area of Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

One of our club members, Gene Wee, is an avid orienteer and he has once again set up an "urban orienteering" course.  Several of our club members participated in this unique fun event last year.  Click on http://www.ptoc.org/Mop2.pdf to see a copy of the entry.  It's a good workout for marathoners - playing a game while putting in the miles.

Hope to see you on June 5th.
