Race Calendar: Publishing Standards

As a voice of running in Lawrence, we are frequently approached by potential race directors wanting to organize races, and by others wanting to publicize established running events on the runLawrence race calendar. The runLawrence website is a service to runners. In an effort to encourage quality races and give guidelines to beginning race directors, any competitive running event posted on the runLawrence race calendar must adhere to the standards listed below. Running events that do not adhere to these standards may be listed on the "other events" calendar if so desired. These standards were developed by a committee of runLawrence members using the "Best Practice Guidelines" from the Chicago Area Runners Association.

The following guidelines for determining if an event will be posted on the event calendar will be used:

  1. Established races will be categorized based on past history. If a previous event did not meet the standards, it will be listed on the "other events" calendar until it does meet the standards.

  2. Directors of first-year events must fill out, sign, and return the First Year Event Form to runLawrence, 2223 Westchester, Lawrence, KS 66049, or email a scanned or pdf file to runlawrence@gmail.com. If the director certifies that the standards will be met, the event will be listed on the race calendar with a note that it is a first-year event.

Event Standards

  1. The race is as advertised. Information is accurate, and every effort is made to do what has been stated.

  2. Safety of runners is a priority. The run route and monitoring of the course make it safe for runners. Adequate monitors are at key points, and appropriate traffic control is planned. A safety plan is in place, which includes providing for emergency assistance, adapting to adverse weather conditions, and a communication system between volunteers.

  3. Race organizers must obtain adequate liability insurance for the event. Information can be found at
  4. Plans are in place to ensure that runners follow the correct route. The race course is clearly marked. This includes clearly marked starting and finishing lines. The course is accurate, preferably USATF certified, where applicable. Please describe how you measured your course.

  5. Aid stations are properly staffed and stocked so that all runners at each station and the start/finish have fluids available. Aid stations are appropriately planned for the race distance and time of year. An adequate number of restrooms is provided for participants and spectators.

  6. All runners receive appropriate race information, which may include race instructions, medical and aid station information, and course maps. This information can be available on-line, in packets, or posted at the race.

  7. An adequate system is used to provide accurate timing of each finisher.

  8. The top overall male and female finishers should be recognized and receive awards. Other age groups and awards may be determined by the race director, but should be communicated clearly to the participants prior to the race. Note: A "fun run" held in conjunction with another event need not meet this standard and the standard above, provided it is clearly advertised as a "fun run”.

  9. Results should be submitted on-line in a timely manner. Please send these to runLawrence@gmail.com or provide a direct link to the race’s website.

  10. Any paid advertisements for events on the web site must meet the standards listed above.
