Congrats to the Baldwin boys AND girls teams for their sweep of the 4A state titles held at Wamego.  Eudora's Brittney Graff is the 2005 state champ.
Top individual finishers for the Lawrence schools: 6th girls - Alysha Valencia (Free State), 7th boys - M J Hassaballa (FS),  8th girls - Kelly Renfro (Lawrence), 11th boys - Matt Riley (L).

Special thanks to the Red Dog runners for their support with the car parking.

If you haven't been out to see Rim Rock Farm, the best cross country course in the nation, you ought to check it out.

Loneliness of the long distance runner?   At the 1998 NCAA Championships, it was an incredible sight to see 5,000 cross country fans running all over the farm to get from one viewing point to the next.  A Dartmouth runner coming to the Oak Holler covered bridge commented, "Is this cool or what!"  Fan support at the 6A/5A races was equally as strong and vocal.

Oct 24:  Next two club meetings - Sun, Oct 30 and Sun, Nov 13.  Our president will be out of town on conference business (Nov 6).  WIll discuss plans for the Thanksgiving Day Run.

A busy weekend of races - three different 5Ks on Sat. in Lawrence alone, plus the Therapy Works 5K Sun.  Also today, Lawrence runners placed high at the Sat. Olathe Mahaffie Half Marathon.  And, Elizabeth Weeks took 2nd at the Napa Valley Classic Half Marathon.

If you did not get the latest issue in the mail of the club newsletter, Second Wind, please contact us.  Photos are included of the Huchingsons in Paris and Brenda Groskinsky's Hood-to-Coast team.  The newsletter goes on the club web site one week after it's been sent.

Welcome new members Jim, Julie and Mitch Colahan; Teresa Fernandez Arab; and Camille Wheeler.

Oct 19:  Report on the Oct 15th Maple Leaf Festival 5K.  I got up at 6 on Sat. and drove to Baldwin for the Maple Leaf Festival 5K. Have you ever been to their "golf course"? Well, only 19 runners showed up. There were no woman over 50, never mind over 60, so I figured I could win my age category if I walked backwards on my hands.

The starting line was two cones and a chalk line in the grass. The man running the race said he didn't have a gun, so someone told him to go "bang", and he did. We all took off and that was the last I saw of anyone.

About half way through, in the middle of the course (composed of three holes?) I lost the route and was running all around the fairway. The man came running out and pointed me in the right direction.

I finally made it across the finish in 37:08. I asked the timer "Did I beat that old lady behind me?" Then I said, "Wait, I am that old lady."  The poor guy who won at 18 min. had to wait a long time for me to finish, but we both got gold medals on a red ribbon. Yeah!! - Janet Huchingson

Oct 11:  Think running at the Ground Hog Underground Run is a maze, take a look at this video.  Thierry Gueorgiou's latest "Follow Me" video shows a leg of the world cup sprint race in Italy.  Thierry is one of the best orienteers in the world.  The video was shot the next day with Thierry's camcorder and is interspersed with the map showing his route.  - Gene Wee
