‘They’re Waiting for Me to Die’: A 72-Year-Old Runner Will Not Let This Race Go

LEADVILLE, Colo. — In the crisp predawn hours last August, 71-year-old Marge Hickman slipped the brace off her sprained ankle and eased to the starting line of the Leadville Trail 100-mile race. Part of her said go home. The race wasn’t what it used to be. She didn’t feel wanted anyway. She loved this race. She hated this race. She revolved her entire life around this race. more

Studies show that reducing body temperature may improve performance, even in relatively temperate conditions. We’ve known that physiology for a long time, but it wasn’t until recently that athletes started making cooling techniques a top priority. How I Finished a 50-Miler (and You Can Too)

On July 9th, I finished Oregon's Mt. Hood 50-Mile trail race in just over 13.5 hours—roughly 16:15 pace. Lots of people just in Lawrence have run much farther, much faster—I’m just a newbie—but there is one aspect of my experience that others might find interesting: I prepared for the race averaging less than 30 miles per week. - J. 8 Performance Science Takeaways From The Men’s Tour de France.

Cycling is the greatest endurance experiment. Millions of people hop on bikes as kids. A few hundred thousand might start pushing themselves harder and harder. Fell running has common characteristics with cross-country running, but is distinguished by steeper gradients and upland country. It is sometimes considered a form of mountain running, but without the smoother trails and predetermined routes often associated with mountain running. The name arises from the origins of the English sport on the fells of northern Britain, especially those in the Lake District. (Wikipedia)
