Three Lessons from Withdrawing from the NYC Marathon
In today's issue of running wisdom I am digging up an old article I wrote way back in 2013 about Ryan Hall's withdrawal from the NYC Marathon.
I thought it was pretty relevant given the NYC Marathon is a week away and we've been seeing a lot of athletes coming into our 6 week bootcamps struggling to break out of an injury cycle and getting stuck in a plateau between races. more

Haskell Cross Country claims No. 1 spot in conference rankings. With one of the larger programs in the past few years and some impressive feats thus far, Haskell Indian Nations Unviersity Cross Country has made their mark for NAIA Conference team ratings. On Sept 20 both Men's and Women's Cross Country were named No.1 in the Continental Athletic Conference 2022 ratings. As one of the up and coming groups Haskell has seen post pandemic, the Fightin' Indians are surging ahead of the competition, including some NCAA Div I & II programs. more

The Illusion of Progress in Sports Technology - The unending search for a competitive edge in sports has a cost. It’s called the Red Queen effect.
. . .any competitive edge is short-lived. “Once an effective technology gets adopted in a sport, it becomes tyrannical,” Thomas Murray, a philosopher who studies the ethics of sport, told me after the trip. “You have to use it.” What, then, would be the point of electric brain stimulation if everyone else had it, too? You’d be right back where you started—until the next hot performance booster emerged and the cycle began again. more

Sunday, Sept 18, Paul Heitzman passed away in his house, on his farm near Eudora. He was one of Lawrence's national class masters runners along with Dick Wilson (the photo is from the 2005 roast held in honor of Dick and Paul; Paul Boone is in the middle).
He was also a competitive long-distance runner who was recognized as the track athlete of the year in 2002 by the USA Track and Field governing body at the age of 71, and was inducted into the USATF Masters Hall of Fame in 2017. He held state and national records for his age group and continued running competitively into his early eighties. More on Paul.

This was the training lesson (Sept 12) on how to run stiff-legged rather than bend so much in the knees before everyone went on the river trails with Christopher McDougall (Born to Run). After the run Eddie Sandoval from Pinole Blue (from Wichita) provided cold pinole drinks. The event was co-sponsored by the Raven Bookstore that took took pre-orders on McDougall's new training book.
