The cash prize winners at the runLawrence Thanksgiving Day 5K
The 2024 run featured a course record and a participation record on a cold day with a race-time temperature of 26 degrees.
Reid Buchanan of Kansas City ran 14:36 to break the 14:54 record set by Evan Landes in 2023 and win $250 in prize money for the overall win.
Buchanan’s wife, Sarah, also won $250 as the first-place woman in 17:14, second only to Amy Cragg’s 16:47 course record in 2016.
A record of 1,341 runners and walkers registered this year. 1,190 ran Thursday in spite of the cold, brisk conditions.
Don Turner of Shawnee and Carolyn Kensett of Chanute won $125 each as masters division (over 40) winners.
Turner repeated his win from 2023. His time of 21:47 at age 75 equals an age-adjusted time of 14:57 based on the World Masters Athletics age-grading tables.
Kensett’s time of 24:50 at age 71 equals an age-adjusted time of 17:08.
Masters awards are based on chip time as age-adjusted on the WMA tables, which compare times for runners of different ages based on world-best times by age.
Overall winners are based on gun time (first across the line).
Prize money is offered to the fastest male and female finishers as well as to masters winners and is separate from age-group awards.
Eric Vazquez of Lawrence was second overall male in 15:12, and Justyn France of Olathe was third in 15:27. Hanna Keltner of Eudora was second overall woman in 18:56, and Ashley Turpin of Meriden was third in 19:21. Michelle Andrew of Topeka ran 20:15 at age 52 for an age-graded time of 17:43. Zdenko Duris of Lawrence ran 18:30 at age 45, an age-graded time of 16:56.

Another club member, Becky McClure, was up in Sioux Falls, SD on Nov. 23rd and placed 1st in F60+ in the Gobble Wobble 10K.

Congratulations to runLawrence members at the Route 66 Marathon in Tulsa Sat, Nov 23. Kent Ely finished his first marathon in 5:53:12. Matt O'Reilly was 2nd in M40-44 with a time of 3:07:20. Karen Hyde took first in F60-64 in the Gobbler Grind Half Marathon in 2:03:17 in Overland Park. Ellen Young ran the Lagerhead Half (in Ottawa) and placed 1st in F70+. Club members were busy this weekend.

Congratulations to the Haskell Indian Nations women's and men's teams as they both won the Continental Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships. The women beat Spartan Methodist College (South Carolina) by a narrow three point margin, 31 to 34. The mentook four of the top fove places totally 10 points. 2nd place Florida College scored 48 points. The races were held at Holloway Park in Lakeland, Florida.

Congratulations to Lawrence's Josh Baden for winning the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon on Sunday, Nov. 3. A lot club members and former members have been busy in the last three weeks.
