The first item of business was a
review of the Thanksgiving Day 5K race. The race was deemed a
success by all measurements. We reached our goal of doubling
entries from last year, with 199 registrants. All aspects of the
race went well. We will open day-of-race registration a little
earlier next year; however, we were able to accommodate everyone and
start the race on time. Having the first half of the race on city
streets and then doubling back on the levee worked very well - there
were many positive comments about the course. It was also well
marked and monitored. We had excellent assistance from the
Lawrence Police Department. The finish line crew and the results
crew are to be commended for an outstanding job. We had accurate
results tabulated and awards presented within 30 minutes of the race
finish. There were plenty refreshments for the runners and
leftovers were taken to local shelters. It was agreed that we
will continue this race in the present format and not make attempts to
make it a very large event. We like the more down-home, local
character of the event as it is and it is manageable for a club of our
size without putting too much strain on club members.
Brenda Groskinski is coordinating the sale of Lawrence Dining Club
cards to benefit runLawrence. These make great gifts for
teachers, coaches, etc, or as stocking stuffers. Please contact
Brenda to make your purchase.
The next item on the agenda was election of officers. By
acclimation, all current officers will continue in their present
positions. These are:
The club needs additional volunteers for specific jobs such as being
director of a race; being in charge of ordering club clothing;
responsibility for regular club runs, social events, etc. Please
volunteer for any of these opportunities.
Some time was then spent on plans for the Dam Run scheduled for March
25, 2006. This will be a combined effort with the Lawrence Parks
& Recreation Department. A draft of the entry form was
presented and suggestions for changes were presented. Gene Wee
will coordinate this with Duane Peterson. Also, Dee & Molly
will be in contact with Duane to finalize the details of the working
agreement for this combined effort. We hope to increase the
entrants in this event particularly with a certified 12K course
offering. Ed Payne is checking on routes.
We have received a few orders for club clothing; however, we need a few
more before we reach the minimum of 12 items required to place an
order.
