A challenge to a long standing idea about lactic acid has sparked discussion among runners across the country. Comments from an American orienteer saying the NYT article has some truth, but also makes some mistakes. Click on "contact us" and share your thoughts. May 15 - Greg Burger asks us to join him on the trails. He's letting us in on a running secret. Road Runner Sports sent an e-mail praising the benefits of trail running including reducing overuse injuries and better chances of attaining your marathon pace goals. Read more. May 10 - Group Runs - The list has been updated. Molly Wood starts her beginner's group run on Wed, from the Lied Center meeting at 5:45 am. Check out the full list of options. Several club members have set goals for the fall and the group runs are a way to help you stick to your plans. Clever name for a race, but. . . this weekend in Cedar Falls, IA, you could enter the Run Like a Mother 4 Mile. The website has a printable registration form. Is there an unprintable version? Photos from the Apr 30 club social at Greg's. (Brenda Groskinsky photos) May 8 - Re: Lincoln Marathon - On the return trip from Lincoln, the discussion got around how the elite runners throw in bursts of speed like the 4:50 pace in Boston and we marveled how it must be nice to play those games. For most of us, the goal is to complete the course in the best pace possible. Topeka's Dave Halferty won the men's marathon yesterday. The Lincoln Journal-Star did an interview about Dave and the tactics he used that day. May 7 - Lincoln Marathon/Half Marathon Results - Karen Hyde improved her previous best marathon time by 30 min setting a PR in 3:38:28 and was the top female finisher from Lawrence. Lindy Eakin was the top male finisher in 3:28:15. In the half marathon, Dee Boeck was the top female finisher and won the F55-59 division again. Jake Messersmith posted best men's time in 1:30:03. May 2 - T.R. - It can stand for "Trolley Run", which is certainly one of Kansas City's biggest races. T.R. can also be the "Tiomila Relay" - the huge orienteering relay race in Sweden. Both races were held on Apr 30. At our social on Sunday, there was talk about the Leadville 100 for Ed, Greg changing his trail runs to perhaps a Sunday morning time, Molly just finished the Boston Marathon and Marsha getting ready for Chicago. Our members enjoy a variety of options to running. My interest the past few years has been to run between the trails doing the orienteering thing. Here's a video of this year's Tiomila. (Click on the team photo to start the video - it may take awhile to load). The runners wearing headlamps pick up their maps in the late night start before heading out into the woods. There are 10 members per team. The exchange zone to tag your next runner is a lot more crowded than the exchange zone at the KU Relays. Everyone runs to checkpoints along the course (a chip is strapped to the back of your hand to check in - an electronic key - at those orange controls). The terrain is true cross country and not many trails. About 9 hours later the Norwegian team from Halden wins - again (the Yankees of the sport). The video was created by a French club from the live Swedish broadcast with the background music added. There was also a women's race the same weekend. If you want to run between the trails, ask me next fall. The woods are nasty in Kansas in the summer. - the web page editor May 1 - Results of local area runners from the Sunday Trolley Run. A current project involves the development and printing of a small, attractive, easy to distribute card which lists the benefits of joining runLawrence and referencing our website. These cards can be handed out by our members at local races and to any runners that we encounter who are not currently members or who may not be aware of our club. Hopefully we will have these cards ready to supply to club members at our June meeting.
