Here's a Go-Pro video of the orienteering event held Nov 17 at Park University which included a course that went on campus plus going into the underground cave. Orienteer Kansas had wanted to host an underground O' event five years ago and thanks to Park U and mapmaker Reta Roe, this was the first underground event in the US. From Mike Eglinski's run with the Go-Pro, you can learn a few tips.
Notice he is always orienteering the map to match where he's running (north is always north). Hear his footsteps; he's light on his feet, not plodding. Notice how often he reads his map, staying in contact with the map. Imagine losing contact when he was in the cave. The tracking on his map is done with his Garmin which lost the satellite connections underground. Here's a copy of the underground map. His video ends at point 13.
